Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters, and families, on the full moon of the Hindu month of (Shravan Poornima), or around July and August. This day is also called Brother and Sister Day.

From the Vedic period till today, there is a tradition in the society of priests to tie the Raksasutra to the priests. In ancient times, priests used to tie Raksha sutras on the day of Shravan Purnima to the king and senior members of the society. It was believed that the king and the elders would protect society, religion, sacrifice, and priests. This tradition is believed to have originated from the Devasur Sangram.
